Achilles

Achilles was the greatest and, in some accounts, the most handsome of the greek hero's in the siege of Troy, a tremendous battle, where the greeks tried to get Helen back from Troy. (Helen of Troy)
He was born to the King of the Myrmidons, Peleus, and a sea nymph called Thetis. Both immortals Zeus and Poseidon wanted to marry Thetis, untill Prometheus told Zeus that the child of Thetis would be greater than the father.
When Achilles was born, Thetis attempted to make him immortal, in some accounts she dipped him in the river Styx, that borders the living from Hades, god of the dead, realm. She held him by his ankle, as to not let him float away, thus making it so his ankle was the only mortal part of his body, the only part that could be injured. Other accounts say she anoited his body in ambrosia and placed him attop a fire, to burn the mortal parts of his body away, but was interupted by his father, Peleus.
The king had numerous arguments with his wife, one occasion he hit her, eventually he took Achilles away and gave him to Chirion, the wise centuar, to teach. Thetis was distraught and promised never again to come back to Peleus. Becuase if you harm a sea nymph that you are wedded to, she will return to her sisters in the ocean, never again to come out.
(all for now)
